When Cristina Kress was asked if she wanted to take over the family business 20 years ago, she didn’t hesitate to take up the challenge.
The family business, based in Paraguay, was established in 1978 to grow citrus fruit and it now employs 800 people.
“My dad was very strict in separating things; the company for him and the household for her.”
In the early years of the family business, Cristina was given the opportunity to study for one year at the St Gallen University in Switzerland.
“My idea was to continue for at least two more years, but as many things in life, some plans were never meant to happen.”
Following the death of her father, Cristina’s mother had became tired and lonely so asked her daughter if she was willing to head back home to run the business with her.
”On that day I’d just turned 20 years old. Of course, my answer was YES, I will come home and take on the challenge. My job for the last 11 years has been the running of the Agroindustry we built over the last 40 years with agriculture, horticulture, juice and water plants and commercial worldwide distribution of our end and sub products.”
A subproduct for the family business, is grains and concentrates, as well as products thta go business to business and the end products are those for the final consumers.
Cristina is now the CEO of the company and her mother, Beate, is President. Kressburgo, the village founded around the company, has grown to 4,000 people making a living with and without the company.
“Our last project was to modernize and expand our school, where I was a student 25 years ago, to a quality education institute that even offers mechatronics to the kids as a bachelor and the cost is almost 100% subsidized by the company. Others believe that education is our best way to reach development. This is what I love. I love being part of nature, working together with it and the people involved, with something healthy and necessary for all humans, making good things and showing a part of what Paraguay can offer.”
For the Kressa family, it started with a passion many years ago, that believed in the potential of their country.
“I have two wonderful children and a husband that are all involved in this passion and I hope very much to earn the possibility to continue on this wonderful path.”
