Becks Tosswill grew up within strong farming families. Her Grandfather an avid Romney Ram breeder, back when wool was considered ‘gold’ in the 40s and 50s and 60s, and her mum’s family are long time dairy farmers in the Wairarapa. Growing up on a sheep and beef farm in the Wairapapa, before heading off to study Computer Graphic Design in Wanganui. Becks never thought she would return to the Wairarapa hills, and after graduating she packed her bags and headed to the bright lights of Wellington, totally not farming related!
Then the lure of someone special led her back to her home town, where her and her now husband Richard own a 650 hectare hill country farm in Gladstone. They run both sheep and beef, and her role on farm is at a support and governance level. Together the two have been successful in recently winning the 2016 Ballance Farm Environment Awards – The Farm Stewardship Award and The Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Award. This year they were runner-up in the Wairarapa Farm Business of the Year award. They have also begun their journey as a Beef + Lamb innovation farm where they are trialling clover management on eastern un-cultivatable hill country land.
Becks grew up a farming 80s kid, and always believed in having a supporting secondary income, so she set about creating her own ‘thing’. "Initially it was a bit of a challenge, as being in the Wairarapa and explaining what I do and its benefits was, at the time, a bit unusual - didn’t I just colour in??" However, things have moved on and in the last eight years Becks has built up a client base in and around the rural sector through her own graphic design agency, Farmers Daughter Design Studio. Her clients include rural software companies, food and produce brands, honey and olive oil producers, stud breeders, rural consultants, a stockfeed company, and rural trucking companies, to name a few.
Becks has shaped her business around her life which encompasses the nature of being a farmers wife, mother of three young children, and their farm location. This is something she is super proud of and would love to share and help inspire other rural women. Farmers Daughter Design Studio works with passionate, inspiring and enthusiastic creative Entrepreneurs within the agri sector. They are a team of graphic designers and with their combined skill sets style client brands, bring their vision to life. By working with them they enchant their audience, and elevate their brand to the next level, helping drive their business performance. They thrive around driven people and love listening to other people's vision, whilst creating a story around the brand. Their aim is to unleash a brands passion and enthusiasm leaving their clients feeling excited and wanting more.
Becks also supports organisations through design and communications, such as the East Coast Rural Support Trust, and their local rural school, through marketing and promos for their major fundraiser. "I’m involved in all stages of the branding process from creating the initial visual identity right through to organising all the elements that bring a business to life through its brand – such as stationery, website, and packaging. I love the creative environment and the farm I live on with my family, it’s such a positive part of what I can give back to the industry, by supporting the growth of local industries."
Becks, we are firm believers that an AgWomen isn't necessarily someone who has studied Ag or who works hands on on a farm. We know that they come in all forms, and we are stoked to see you do so well with your business. Agriculture is a very innovative and creative industry, and we think it's great you are part of that process.
