Henrietta was born and bred in southern England into a farming family. Her passion was the horse-racing industry and she worked as secretary to top jump and flat trainers, spent 8 years managing the National Jockey’s Booking Agency and then became self-employed as the “Sandwich Lady” catering for the racing stable staff in Lambourn “Valley of the Racehorse”.
On a holiday to NZ she met and later married Graeme. They have now been together since 2005 and live at Waianakarua in North Otago. With Graeme, she is joint Director of Purvis Feeds Ltd and they make and market premium quality Lucerne Chaff which is infused with cold-pressed rapeseed oil. Their farm is mostly sown with lucerne which together with hay bought in from a select group of growers in Central Otago it makes up the raw product for the chaff.
Their chaff is sold widely throughout the South Island through Farmlands and PGG Wrightson shops together with some independent stores. They are also making inroads to supplying the chaff to racehorse trainers and shops in the North Island.
Henrietta has a busy and varied life and says “No two days are ever the same”. She does everything from accounts and logistics to weed and pest control and everything in between. She is always keen to up-skill and in 2017 completed the Agri-Women’s Development Trust “Understanding Your Farming Business” course which she said was invaluable and a great way of meeting like-minded women.
The couple also have a lease block at Moeraki where they grow out Fresian x beef calves and sell them a year later at approx 400kgs.
Henrietta and Graeme have 3 quarter horses and in the summer she competes in the Open Barrel Race and has been to most of the country’s rodeos and competed in 6 National Finals of Rodeo. A long way from England and riding racehorses, but loving farming and the way of life in New Zealand
