Jo Scott works in the breeding programs of Sheep and Beef farmers right across the country. Her and the team help them to integrate DNA technology as both a management and breeding solution.
Sometimes Jo might travel 800km in one day and drink 5 cups of tea but she also gets to hangout with passionate, progressive and inspiring Kiwi farmers on a daily basis! Jo often gets lost, has no phone service, and her truck is always dirty but she gets to travel to some amazing farms right across the countryside and her office is often a woodshed full of lambs ready to be docked and DNA sampled.
Zoetis is a global company, providing DNA solutions to farmers world wide. What is exciting for Jo, is that in NZ we are the centre of Sheep excellence. Part of her job is to assist globally in the understanding and implementation of technology for Sheep breeders.
"Industry education is so important in this Animal Genetics space that it is often considered a scary topic, or is sometimes not even realised as a vital part of the agricultural system. At Zoetis and as a personal passion, I play a role in the education of what it means to buy a ram or a bull with superior genetics."
Jo, your day to day sounds like a dream (minus the 800km's driving). Spending time in rural communities and meeting so many inspiring people is what we love about the New Zealand primary sector.
