Lisa Powell works in the Cheese Technical team for Fonterra in New Zealand. She has been in her role for 5 years now and absolutely loves it. "I plan on staying here until I retire. One day I want my email signature to read: Lisa Powell Senior Cheese Technologist Cheese Guru!!"
Lisa and her team are basically the cheese science team for six factories across New Zealand. On a day to day basis Lisa looks after things like New product development, formulation changes, regulation work for exporting, customer support (factories and overseas customers), sensory analysis of cheese (a recent study linked eating cheese to reducing dental cavities – they like to ensure people do not get any of those). Lisa also offers technical advice on the maturation of cheese, factory trials and support (some of factories are located in the beautiful South Island), etc.
Lisa got to this point in her career by studying a Bachelor of Food Technology at Massey University 2006 and scoring her first job at Hubbards cereal company as a product developer! Her second job was in Wakefield (UK) at Speedibake, a baked goods company as a process technologist. "I ate a significant amount of garlic bread, muffins, doughnuts and cheese buns here." Lisa's third job was with Fonterra – her dream job working in cheese!
"I love what I do because cheese is a complex food, every day I learn something new about it and that will continue for at least another 10-20 years I suspect. My team are an excellent bunch of people with such huge experience and knowledge; I hope to be as knowledgeable as them one day."
"I LOVE CHEESE – I will never get sick of cheese."
Lisa finds that working in New Zealand's primary industry is fantastic. "Being able to talk to farmers and explain what happens to their products makes my job even more enjoyable."
Lisa, you have a love for cheese like no other! You passion for working with such a unique product is obvious and must mean for be an extremely satisfying job with Fonterra.
